What You Get: The Reel's Own Sound
The sound you save is the reel's soundtrack, exactly as it plays: the creator's voice, the music, or both, mixed the way the reel has them. It comes out of the video file itself, so it always matches what you hear. Instagram keeps that sound as AAC audio at about 64 to 72 kbps. M4A gives you that file unchanged. MP3 converts it in your browser to a 192 kbps MP3, which plays everywhere, from car stereos to editing apps. No converter can add quality the original doesn't have, so if your device plays M4A, that is the purest copy.
Songs and Original Audio
A reel's sound is either original audio, recorded by a creator, or audio from Instagram's library: songs, film and TV clips, sound effects. Library audio is licensed for use on Instagram, not to you. Saving a song to identify it or listen again is one thing, but putting it in your own video, podcast or ad needs permission from whoever owns it. Even Instagram doesn't allow library music in boosted reels. Original audio belongs to the creator who recorded it, so ask before reusing that too.
Any Public Reel or Video
It works for reels, video posts and each video inside a carousel, which has its own sound buttons. Enter a username instead of a link to browse an account and open any reel from its grid. The MP3 is made right in your browser, so it takes a few seconds for a minute of sound, and it works for videos up to 10 minutes long. Longer ones save as M4A. Reels from private accounts can't be opened, and a reel Instagram has muted has no sound left to save.

No. A private account's reels are visible only to the followers it approved.
