Save Stories Before They Disappear
Stories last 24 hours. If one is worth keeping (a recipe, a sale, an announcement, a moment from a friend's trip), save it while it's up: the photo comes as a JPEG and the video as an MP4 with its sound. After the 24 hours, it's gone from public view unless the owner saved it to a highlight.
Anonymous by Design
Saving a story here never touches an Instagram account of yours, so you don't appear in the viewers list, and the owner gets no notification. Instagram doesn't tell anyone about screenshots of regular stories either, but a download keeps the full picture and the video's sound, which a screenshot can't.
Questions
Will the owner know I downloaded their story?
No. Your name doesn't appear in their viewers list, and Instagram sends no notification for downloads.
Can I download stories from private accounts?
No. Only from public accounts.
Can I download highlights too?
Yes. Open the account's Highlights tab, pick a highlight, and every item in it has a Download button.
Can I download a story that already expired?
No. After 24 hours a story is no longer public, unless the owner added it to a highlight.
Do I need an account or an app?
No. It works in any browser, on a phone or a computer.
